Vietnam Visa for Indian Citizens: The 2026 Guide (incl. Phu Quoc Rule)
Updated: June 22, 2026 · 8 min read
Short answer: yes, Indian citizens need a visa for Vietnam — with one exception almost everyone misses. India isn't on Vietnam's visa-exemption list, so for nearly every trip you need the online eVisa. The exception is Phu Quoc Island, where Indians can stay up to 30 days visa-free under specific conditions. Here's how the eVisa works, what it costs in INR, the passport-name trap that causes most Indian rejections, and exactly how the Phu Quoc rule applies.
Quick answer for Indians: Indians need a Vietnam eVisa — $25 single / $50 multiple (about ₹2,100 / ₹4,200), valid up to 90 days, done fully online. The only exception is flying direct to Phu Quoc Island (30 days visa-free). Match your name to your passport exactly — it's the #1 reason Indian applications get rejected.
Do Indians Need a Visa for Vietnam?
Yes — for almost every trip. Vietnam grants visa-free entry to a specific list of countries (mostly Western Europe plus Japan and South Korea), and India isn't on it. So whether you're going for tourism, business, or to visit family, you need a visa before you fly. Having a long-term US or other visa doesn't change this; Indian passport holders still need a Vietnam visa regardless of what other visas they hold. For nearly all Indian tourists, that means the eVisa.
🌴 The Phu Quoc Exception (the one most Indians miss)
There's exactly one way an Indian citizen can enter Vietnam visa-free: Phu Quoc Island. You can stay up to 30 days without a visa — but only if you fly directly to Phu Quoc International Airport (or arrive by sea) from outside Vietnam, and don't pass through any other Vietnamese entry point. The catch trips people up constantly: if your flight connects through Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City first, you've entered Vietnam at that airport, so you need an eVisa. And once you're on Phu Quoc under this exemption, you can't travel on to the mainland without a visa. If Phu Quoc is your whole trip and you fly direct, you're covered. If it's one stop on a bigger itinerary, get the eVisa.
What It Costs (in INR)
The government eVisa fee is $25 for single entry and $50 for multiple entry — roughly ₹2,100 and ₹4,200 at mid-2026 exchange rates. The number of entries, not the length of stay, is what changes the price. The fee is paid online during the application and is non-refundable even if you're rejected — which is exactly why getting the details right the first time matters so much (more on that below). If you apply through a service, a service fee is added on top to handle the form and support you. See our full fee breakdown for government vs service costs.
The Name-Matching Trap (the #1 Reason Indians Get Rejected)
From handling applications, this is the single most common reason Indian eVisas get delayed or rejected — and it's entirely avoidable. Your full name on the application must match the ICAO machine-readable line at the bottom of your passport's data page exactly: the same given names, middle names, and surname, in the same order. Indian passports often split names in ways that confuse the form — an initial that's actually a surname, a single-word name, a name with multiple components, or a given name printed where you'd expect the surname. If you type your name the "normal" way instead of the way it appears on that ICAO line, the system flags a mismatch. Copy it character-for-character from the bottom two lines of your passport, not from how you usually write your name. This one habit prevents most Indian rejections.
If your application does get rejected, our guide on Vietnam eVisa rejections covers how to fix the error and reapply.
Single or Multiple Entry: Which Should You Pick?
Most Indian tourists on a one-country trip only need single entry. Choose multiple entry if you'll leave Vietnam and come back — for example a Southeast Asia itinerary that loops through Cambodia or Thailand and returns. One useful detail for Indian travellers: a single-entry eVisa still lets you take domestic flights within Vietnam, including to and from Phu Quoc, as long as it's all one continuous trip without leaving the country. Our guide on single vs multiple entry walks through the scenarios.
Processing Time — and the Tet Warning
Standard processing is about three to five working days. India is only about 1.5 hours behind Vietnam, so unlike US applicants there's no awkward time-zone gap to plan around. Two things to watch: apply at least 7 to 10 days before departure, and be careful around Tet (Vietnamese Lunar New Year) in January or February, when government processing slows significantly and a "standard" application can take much longer than usual. If your flight is close, see your urgent and rush options — results are possible in one working day or even hours during Vietnam business hours.
Documents Indian Applicants Need
- •Passport valid at least 6 months beyond arrival, with 2 blank pages.
- •Passport bio-page scan (JPEG) — clear, showing the ICAO lines at the bottom.
- •Portrait photo (4x6cm, white background, no glasses, recent). See our photo requirements guide.
- •Vietnam address — your hotel name is fine.
- •A card that works internationally for the fee — Indian cards sometimes need international transactions enabled.

Do Indian citizens need a visa for Vietnam?
Yes, for nearly every visit. India isn't on the exemption list, so you need an eVisa, valid up to 90 days. The one exception is flying directly to Phu Quoc Island (30 days visa-free).
How much is it in INR?
The government fee is $25 single / $50 multiple — about ₹2,100 / ₹4,200. It's paid online and non-refundable even if rejected.
Can Indians visit Phu Quoc without a visa?
Yes, up to 30 days — but only if you fly directly to Phu Quoc from abroad without passing through another Vietnamese entry point. Transit through Hanoi or Saigon first and you need an eVisa.
Why do Indian applications get rejected?
Most often a name mismatch. Your name must match the ICAO line of your passport exactly — same order of given names, middle names, surname. Names with initials or multiple parts trip this up most.
How long does it take?
About three to five working days. India is only 1.5 hours behind Vietnam. Apply 7–10 days ahead, and allow extra time around Tet when processing slows.
